International Development

We believe that strong local partnerships are key to creating a healthier, more equitable future. Through Canadian charities working in deep collaboration with community-based organizations in the Global South, we support efforts that improve health and expand opportunities—especially for women and children—and, where possible, build resilience to the effects of climate change.

About the Program

Our grants support efforts to improve maternal and child health and to expand education and economic opportunities for women and girls. We recognize that the communities we aim to serve are among the most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, and we encourage projects that incorporate climate resilience or adaptation into their design. We prioritize initiatives with strong local partnerships, a track record of impact, and approaches that are sustainable and help communities thrive over the long term.

Important Information for Prospective Partners

We are not accepting new applications for international development funding at this time.

Over the past several months, the Peter Gilgan Foundation has been engaged in a period of reflection and planning. We’ve been listening to our grantee partners, learning from peer funders, and considering how we can deepen our impact in the years ahead.

As part of this process, we’ve made the decision to move away from our open annual call for proposals. Instead, we are focusing our support on current grantee partners—organizations we know and trust, and where we see strong alignment with our mission.

We recognize this is a time of significant volatility across the international development sector. That’s why we’re prioritizing consistency, clarity, and trust. Our aim is to be a steady, long-term partner that organizations can count on.

While we are evolving toward a more focused and relationship-centered model, this transition will take place gradually and in step with future strategic planning. In the meantime, we remain committed to walking alongside our existing partners—rooted in mutual respect and a shared vision of a world where every child and family can thrive.

Should this approach change in the future and we reopen the application process, updates will be posted here.
