Climate Change

Climate change is one of the greatest barriers to building a healthier, more prosperous, and sustainable future. Yet, combating climate change presents an enormous opportunity to foster economic innovation, technological progress, and societal well-being. The Peter Gilgan Foundation supports initiatives that embrace this moment, advance green industry, strengthen communities, and nurture a thriving world for all.

PLEASE NOTE: Application intake for the Climate Change grant program will pause from May 1, 2026 to May 31, 2026 while we update our grant portal.

About the Program

Our climate change grants support four focus areas: Low-emission and renewable technologies, nature-based solutions, green building and living, and community resilience.

Understanding that greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions ultimately drive climate change, the Foundation prioritizes projects with the potential to enable large-scale emission reductions in Canada.

Impact at a Glance

In fiscal 2025, our Climate Change grant program distributed $4M to advance climate change mitigation, resilience, and adaptation through:

  • 8 grants supporting technological innovation and energy conservation
  • 8 grants advancing a greener built environment

Application Guidelines

What Makes a Strong Application

  • Clear, realistic plans – Project budgets, timelines, and outcomes should be well-defined, achievable, and transparent.
  • Demonstrated climate impact – Activities should contribute to climate change mitigation and/or adaptation and resilience.
  • Articulated context – The challenge at hand and how the activities are part of the solution should be clearly outlined.
  • Measurable, meaningful outcomes – While we recognize that impact is not always linear, goals, outcomes, or indicators of progress should be defined and reportable.
